Address: Dieppe Bay, Basseterre
The Huguenots sailed into the bay in the late 1500s, fleeing from France because of their religious beliefs. After they established a small settlement, building with local volcanic stone, they decided the configuration of the land and sea reminded them of their homeland. They named it Dieppe. The other French were not to discover St. Kitts until several years into the 1600s.
At the water's edge a merchant had built a combination warehouse and shop, atop which he lived with his family. Three hundred and fifty years later, a young editor of House and Garden Magazine was looking for a warm place to live, perhaps to run a small guest house.
He answered an ad and found the dilapidated remains of this once proud building and immediately saw its potential. His name is Arthur Leaman. He took two years to completely restore it and plant a coconut grove on the beach. In 1963 he opened his doors to his first guests. His friends told him he'd bought a lemon. He said, it had better be golden. And so his creation, The Golden Lemon was named.
The Golden Lemon caters to those who want to get away from their normal life-style pattern and relax. No one will object if you unplug the phone. You can bring and borrow books from the library and melt away the day by your pool, on a lounge chair on the beach under an umbrella, or on the lawn in a garden.
